Sofia took part in the world relay tour before the Olympic Games in Paris

 

Sofia has proven its love for sports and today hundreds of young people are joining the international Olympic initiative on the occasion on 500 days before the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024. The Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, said this during the relay tour in the park of the NDK (National Palace of Culture).

The French Cultural Institute in Bulgaria, Sofia Municipality, the “Sofia European Capital of Sports” Foundation, and the Bulgarian Olympic Committee organize the initiative. The opening was attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports Vesela Lecheva, Stefka Kostadinova - President of the BOC (Bulgarian Olympic Committee), the Ambassador of France Joel Meyer, Anatoly Iliev, Foundation "Sofia - European Capital of Sports", as well as our great champions - Maria Grozdeva, Vanya Gesheva, Zdravka Yordanova, Svetla Dimitrova, as well as our outstanding athletes Antoan Bozhilov, Hakan Osman and Dimitar Pavlov.

Mayor Fandakova also pointed out that we are glad that together with us are our great athletes - European, world and Olympic champions who join the initiative, are with us, and set an example for the young people.

"Sofia European capital of sports" has held nearly 1,000 sports events so far, Mayor Fandakova also said. The performance of Sofia was highly appreciated and the city won the title of European capital of sports permanently, and in 2024, when the Olympic Games in Paris will be held, Sofia will be the "world capital of sports".
I wish success to all participants in today's relay race. I wish many Bulgarian participants in the Olympics in Paris to return loaded with medals, said Yordanka Fandakova.
This event exemplifies the values of the Olympic Games, which are determination, solidarity and courage, said the Ambassador of France, Joel Meyer.
Sofia welcomed the international Olympic initiative from Kuwait and Bahrain and handed it over to Norway and Nigeria.
